Marriottsville, Maryland - Early morning on April 13, women began filing in to the classroom at Monumental Rifle and Pistol Club. They were there to learn how to shoot. Many of the ladies arrived with little to no experience; this would be their first real exposure to the shooting sports.
The classroom instruction portion started with basic gun safety and continued on to explore the parts and components of common rifles. Range safety and rules were covered as well. Before Lead Instructor Patty West completed her lessons, the women were shown a variety of ammunition — everything from dummy rounds to empty casings — so that everyone could get a feel for the different calibers of ammunition. After all the questions were answered, it was time to hit the range.
It was when our ladies filed out to the range that the real fun began. Each women was assigned a coach (many of whom were also women) to guide them through the first steps to taking their first shots. For fun, we gave them pink target frames to help focus their point of fire. The students moved from rifle to rifle, growing more and more comfortable with each new experience.
Before we knew it, it was time for lunch.
Everyone who participated, including the first timers, had great fun. Each walk away with knowledge, skill and an excitement to come back and shoot again!
